Happiness is...
by Wendy Garrett
To accept the premise of trying to find inner happiness in a world of chaos, one
must assume and attach oneself to the concept that the world is indeed all chaos.
It is one-sided. Happiness is knowing the world is just right. There is no perfection
and that is, in itself, perfection...chaos is relative.
We are given a wonderful gift. The gift is to breathe. Everything else is gravy.
From that point on, it is a matter of how we build our house...or the body...and
as that entails, mind, body, spirit. To achieve and maintain happiness requires an
ability to know life is, you are, and that's that. Whatever the case and whatever
the state, it is enough. Acceptance.
We walk the path in war and peace. Both are required to shift the balance of to and
fro. From the macro to the micro, we are not stagnant; as such, we are not stable.
Chaos exists hand in hand with stability. And that is the beauty of the world. It
is the perception that what is happening "outside" is wrong or chaotic
and not OK that can cause "inside" dis-ease or discomfort. If indeed one
chooses to internalize that belief, one does incorporate the discomfort inherent
within the concept that all is not well with the world.
Life is a constant state of growth. All is born in chaos and yet all is in perfect
rhythm with the process.
War and Peace are catalysts for each other and they are the extreme. There are many
types of war and many types of peace. People survive under all kinds of conditions.
In some of the most horrendous circumstances some have managed to leave record indicating
happiness within. How so? If happiness were determined by the outer state of things,
then many who exist in a relatively peaceful or stable existence are at a loss as
to why they find their situation or inner state lacking.
Happiness and contentment have very little to do with the state of the outside world.
And yet, it is the perfect commentary on the connection or attachment to the world
outside. When it comes to the measure of happiness, the outside world does not exist.
Maintaining the position that no matter what goes on in the outside world, perception
is your choice. You are not attached to what is outside of you. You are. It is. To
say, "I am happy," is to observe. It is a commentary, and thus, it requires
you to step out of the moment. Happiness is lost.
Happiness is to be. When you are happy, there is no saying. Saying breaks the spell.
It is a state of being I am. It is the ultimate contentment to be and to offer no
comment on being. As with all enlightenment, it cannot be explained, nor can it be
taught. It is arrived at as any other point on the path...by walking. Keep walking
and you will find it. When you do, there will be no need to say I am happy. It will
be and so you are: the Cheshire cat. What joy! If others have need of knowing your
state, it will be more than apparent in your glow as you continue walking. Enough
said.
What is chaos, but a perception? What is happiness, but a perception? It is mind
over matter...or matter over mind. All is an illusion. In the flesh, I enjoy the
illusion of happiness, and yet, as that wave recedes I am not attached to it, so
that when it ceases I remain content and when it returns I can once again feel myself
buoyed in the moment. In spirit, happy in between, I am. And in the mind, I am full
of it. Ha! It flies in the face of logic. But as Ben Franklin said: Kites rise highest
against the strongest wind. I use my wind to challenge you to lift the veil and see
the world without the mask. It's extraordinary! The glow! To each his own. I have
my moments of distraction but never any doubt. Knowing it exists is my happiness.
And chaos, perceived or not, cannot touch it. It is. I am. Happy!

is to know Buddha.
To know Buddha
is to laugh and know nothing.
